First debuting in 1952 as the “Healey 100” to much acclaim. Director of British car maker BMC’s Austin division, Leonard Lord, took a particular liking to the sporty roadster, and decided to enter a partnership deal proposed by Donald Healey. The result was the Austin-Healey 100-4.
After finding success at the 1954 24 hours of Le Mans with the 100-4 “Le Mans” prototypes, it was decided for 1955 and 1956, they would produce a special edition of 100-4. The result was a limited run of 640 factory-built 100M Le Mans. The factory prepped Le Mans came with a louvered bonnet, special aluminum cold air box, a special cam, tuned carburetors, and ignition.
Today, the 100 M is widely considered a blue chip collector quality Healey next to the 100S. Its collectibility is driven by low production numbers, nostalgia filled buyers reliving their youth, and the next generation of car enthusiasts looking to experience the embodiment of British Motoring in its heyday. The example present here is a rare opportunity to own a factory-built 100M.
The 100M Le Mans presented here, by Animoya Garage, is finished in Black with Red Coves over a full Red interior, just as it left the factory. It retains its matching-numbers engine, and its Le Mans-specific parts and markings as verified by its BMIHT certificate and 100 M Le Mans Registry Certificate.
The early history of this example is relatively unknown, however, according to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate we have on file, this 100M was completed on December 13th, 1955 and was dispatched to the United States with a laminated windscreen, miles-per-hour speedometer, heater, USA specification lights, and louvred bonnet. The Heritage Certificate also notates this vehicle as a genuine factory built 100M Le Mans.
In the late 90s, a restoration was carried out on this 100M. The chassis was fully restored and painted in the correct black. The front and rear suspension was restored and the engine, transmission, overdrive, rear end, and carburetors were rebuilt by Peter Nesbitt, a British automobile expert. Around 2017 another restoration was carried out to fully dial in this example. The rest of the exterior work was completed and painted back to its original scheme after ensuring there was a correct fit on the doors and other panels, etc. The interior was sorted as well, featuring the original-style Karvel carpet that was ordered from England with a correct Jute pad. All of the tires got replaced with fresh Michelin X’s on new Dunlop 48 spoke chrome wheels. A correct reproduction tool kit was sorted as well as a knock off hammer and original jack, date coded 1955 as well as the original handles.
The restoration was completed in 2019 and today, it remains in very good condition. Most of the Le Mans signifiers and stampings have been identified and photographed including the stamp on the bonnet, trunk lid, cockpit surrounds, engine number, distributor, and carburetor stampings. According to the 100 M Registry Certificate by Bill Meade, the only missing item is its original 541 numbered ignition switch. Other 100M indicators have also been photographed such as the slightly bent “X” brace inside the grille and the bent upright brace to make room for the air intake. Mechanically, this 100M is in good order and has run great during our test drives. It has done more sitting in collections over the past few years so we recommend a minor service and general inspection by a service center to ensure reliability.
This restored example is ready for the show field or to be entered into the next edition of a number of prestigious rallies all over the world such as the 1000 Miglia, California Mille, or the Colorado Grand to name a few.
Included in the sale of this 100M Le Mans is the, correct reproduction owners manual, reproduction tool set, BMIHT certificate, 100 M Le Mans Registry Certificate, tonneau cover, side windows, various restoration photos, and Concours Registry Gold Certificate.
