The Car

In 1959, the most track-prepped 356 you could buy was the Carrera GT. In modern terms, it's akin to the fan-favorite GT3RS. Each of the 31 Carrera GTs produced was fitted with a 1,600cc variant of  Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann’s four-cam four-cylinder boxer engine which made roughly 120 horsepower, and was originally for use for the 550 Spyder several years prior. The complex engine featured alloy cylinder heads with hard-chromed bores and a one-piece forged crankshaft.

Sold alongside the more luxurious GS model, the GT was essentially a road-registerable competition car. The GT also featured a more rigidly secured engine and gearbox along with improved synchros to handle the extra torque. The body remained the same as you would find in normal models, however, it was fitted with alloy doors, hood, and engine and 15-inch light alloy wheels. Additionally, these were fitted with perspex windows.

Upgrades via weight reduction continue into the interior with twin bucket seats, thin need-felt matting throughout and slotted leather straps replaced traditional window winders for the light-weight perspex windows.

This European-delivered 356 Carrera GT is finished in its original configuration of Ruby Red over a black interior. This Carrera GT is also completely turn-key mechanically and cosmetically presented in great condition and is accompanied by its Kardex file.
