The Bike.
With the successes of early BMW bikes like the R67/2, BMW increasingly became known as a brand of durability and reliability, while gaining a reputation for long-distance touring.
The BMW R60 was first introduced in 1956 and continued to build off the original formula and cement their place as a leader in the segment. These bikes featured the first telescopic front forks, which was a unique design that provided unmatched stability. The R60 was also easier to maintain due to their use of a shaft drive system. Overall, the R60/2s blended their handsome aesthetics with robust reliability and engineering to continuously win riders over from the very beginning and roughly two decades later, the formula remained the same, as did the outcome.
The 1967 BMW R60/2 presented here by Animoya Garage, is a recent fully restored masterpiece with no expense spared and countless hours into the project.
Acquired by the consignor in 2022, this R60/2 was said to be in fairly poor condition as it was in cold storage for many years. Like all of the consignor’s projects, he first begins by disassembling the entire bike and cataloging all of the parts to then blueprint a gameplan for the comprehensive restoration.
As expected from such a prolonged stint of sitting, the fluids throughout the bike were thick and dirty. The carburetor slides were frozen with built up oxidation and the rear fender pin had rusted entirely, needing to be drilled out. Fortunately, the transmission and final drive appeared in nice condition, however they were still dismantled, chemically washed, and inspected while apart.
From here, the restoration was properly underway. The cylinders were bored and painted, new pushrod tubes installed and new Schmidt pistons were fitted. New slingers, new SKF and FAG bearings, seals, and gaskets were installed. New heads were media blasted and then coated with Eastwood clear satin and rebuilt with new valves, fresh guides and springs from Kibble-White. The front shocks were rebuilt as well as the swing arms, and so much more.
Today, this fully restored BMW R60/2 presents in immaculate condition showing virtually zero signs of use since its restoration and is fully turn-key. This restoration is a culmination of pure passion for BMW motorcycles which will allow the next owner an opportunity to experience ownership of one of these incredible bikes as they were in 1967!
