The History

In early October in 1972, Porsche unveiled the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 at the Paris Motor Show. They initially only planned to build 500 examples so that their RS would be homologated to race in the Group 4 Special GT, however just one month later, the RS had already completely sold out. Following its immediate success, Porsche decided to triple its production, in the end producing 1,580 units.

The Carrera RS 2.7 came in 4 distinct variants. The racing version (M491), of which 55 were built, the Lightweight (M471) , of which 200 were built, and finally the touring (M472) of which 1,308 were built. Finally, the homologation cars, which were referred to as the ‘RSH’ of which 17 were built.

Each Carrera RS was fitted with large rear wheels, a larger, stronger 2.7 liter flat-6, thinner steel panels as well as fiberglass panels to save weight, and finally an iconic ducktail spoiler, the first-ever of any kind to appear on a 911.

The Car

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 presented here, by Animoya Garage was produced in April of 1973 and is one of just 25 examples ever produced in Gulf Orange and is the recipient of a relatively recent nut and bolt restoration.

The first owner of this Carrera RS originally took delivery of the car at the factory via Raffay & Co of Hamburg Germany. The car changed hands several times over its first 15 years while remaining in Germany. In February of 1989, shortly after being purchased by its 6th owner the engine suffered a failure and the case was cracked. From here, the case was replaced with a correct 7R case and restamped. The 6th owner only held onto the RS for about 1 year before moving it along to its 7th owner, who owned the car all the way until 2001. In October of 2001, the car was listed for sale in Motor-Klassik Magazine and it was sold by the end of the month to a gentleman named Rolf. Still in Germany another 10 years later, in 2010, this RS went in for a full comprehensive restoration which lasted all the way until 2012. Rolf owned the RS until at least 2018, where records show it was still registered to him.

For the next 6 years, not much else was recorded for this example and in 2024, it was purchased by the current consignor from a notable car dealer in Germany. Once in the United States, the RS spent time in New Orleans, Louisiana and had reconditioning work done by Dennis Boada. Work completed included dismantling the entire car for a proper full repaint, new pressure plate, clutch disc, and release bearing, new engine electrical harness, new lenses for the taillights, and more.

Today, this example is presented in near jewelry-like fashion. The rare ‘Gulf Orange’ paint remains in amazing condition and is protected entirely up front with PPF. You can still find the production VIN located behind the knee bumper guard underneath the radio & appears completely unaltered. The RS torsion bar and gearbox tunnel reinforcements are clearly visible without any modifications as well as the RS-specific harness mounts on the parcel shelf. Additionally, from a mechanical standpoint this RS is dialed in perfectly and is completely turn-key.

Included in the sale of this Carrera RS 2.7 is the tool kit, jack, spare, safety triangle, and various service records and restoration photos.
