The 911 was the model that officially put the Porsche name in front of the world. The air-cooled 911, produced from 1964 to 1998, went through a number of engines and styles before a full redesign came with the 996 series.
The early 1970s brought 3 new variants of the 911, T, E, and S, each adding more performance across the board. This generation of 911 also saw safer external door handles, rubber-mounted dashboard gauges, a steering lock, as well as a US-only warning buzzer to let the driver know the keys were left in the ignition.
The performance increase over earlier 911s brought horsepower figures to 123 hp in the 911T, 153 hp in the 911E the mid-range model, then a small amount more in the S, at the top. The E, which slotted in the middle of the line up and stands for Einspritzung, or “Fuel injected” featured many goodies from the top range S, such as ventilated disc brakes and wider wheels. The fuel injection designation was important as the original 911T was still carburated.
In 1973, the final year of the F series, Porsche built just 1055 E Targas, making them exceptionally rare.
The 1973 Porsche 911 E Targa 2.4 presented here, by Animoya Garage, is finished in the iconic and rare shade of Light Yellow (L117) ‘Hellgelb’ over a Tan interior with factory brown houndstooth inserts. It also is an earlier 73’ build, with the more desirable MFI system.
This 911 E Targa comes out of a 51-year ownership with its 2nd owner, who purchased the car on July 1st, 1975, effectively making this a one-owner example. The owner was a Porsche collector based in the Colorado area who loved early 70s 911s, this E in particular. Maintenance was meticulous and record-keeping was strong as we have service receipts that date back all the way to 1976, only a year after purchase. On October 2nd, 1976, according to the accident report we have on file, while performing some maintenance work on the side of the road, a Ford truck struck the rear left side of the vehicle and John’s Auto Restoring, of Colorado Springs completed the repairs shortly after. Based on our assessment, the incident was minor and just required spotwork and likely didn't require replacing the rear quarter panel.
For roughly the next 15 years, the car was enjoyed and driven regularly, seeing servicing and maintenance work through Sterling Service, Jomac, Import Specialists, and Sheppard Foreign Car Repair, all based in Colorado. According to original documents on file, in August of 1990, the car received a full repaint at a total cost of $5,636.50 after being caught in a minor hail storm on a drive. The owner wanted the car perfect rather than attempting to blend panels so it was all consistent.
Today, the car presents in fantastic condition, and honestly looks even better than we would've expected for a 1990s repaint. The Light Yellow paint remains accurate and mostly blemish free and the interior is all original with the exception of the dashboard and the houndstooth inserts which were replaced in 1975 due to some staining. Additionally, although we don't have a COA, we referenced the engine number in the Porsche Red Book and were able to determine it is within range to be original. Thanks to recent services such as new fuel tank, fuel pump, supply/return lines, fuel line replacement, chain tensioner kit, this 911 E is turn-key and ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included in the sale of this 911 E is various service records, 2 keys, original books and manuals, full-size spare wheel and tire and complete original toolkit, and its original 1973 Colorado plate.
